The Galaxy Restaurant is one of Athens’ most famous restaurants. It is located on the rooftop of the Athens Hilton Hotel, in the heart of the city. This stylish restaurant is popular with both hotel guests, visitors to Athens, and local Athenians. During a recent weekend stay at the hotel, my husband and I dined at Galaxy’s restaurant and bar.
Galaxy Restaurant and Bar
The Athens Hilton Hotel is located on Leof. Vasilissis Sofias, at the intersection of two major roads. From the rooftop, there are spectacular views out across both Lycabettus Hill and the Acropolis, as well as the sprawling city of Athens. Galaxy Restaurant and Bar is one of Athens best rooftop bars and has also been voted as one of the world’s ten best rooftop bars by Premier Traveler magazine. The interior is chic and modern; it has a galaxy-inspired ceiling and the colours are space-like purples, blues, and neutrals. In the summer, large glass windows open to allow seating on the balcony space all while allowing patrons inside to enjoy the cool summer breeze.
Alas, we dined at Galaxy in the winter, so we remained inside at a sleek, glamorous table under the celestial ceiling. However, the ambience of Galaxy is vibrant and fun, all while remaining elegant and exclusive. After dinner, the already-lively bar becomes much livelier. Dinner is served until 1am, while the drinks flow until the wee hours of the morning. The service was excellent and the staff at Galaxy is friendly and engaging.
Our meal at the Galaxy Restaurant and Bar
We began our meal with the rocket salad, a crisp and delicious green tossed with creamy goat cheese, romanesco broccoli, jamon Ibérico, pomegranate pips, toasted almonds, green asparagus, drizzled with an organic mastic honey and balsamic vinegar vinaigrette.
For our mains, I ordered the corn-fed chicken breast sous vide. The succulent dish came with bacon popcorn, creamed corn, soy & honey glazed baby vegetables, and a delicious blackberry sauce. My husband ordered the fish of the day with potato crust, a cauliflower cream with curry, toasted almond flakes, chorizo oil, and a wonderful lobster bisque sauce. With our meal, we enjoyed a bottle of Greek white wine.
The menu is Mediterranean-inspired, but there are surprises on it, like mouthwatering sushi, Japanese beef tataki, and a peppered salmon fillet salad. Galaxy describes themselves as being authentic Mediterranean with an international flair. Much of the menu dishes are Greek, Italian, and Spanish with a slight modern twist.
Dessert and Liqueurs at Galaxy Restaurant
After such an excellent meal, we decided to try several desserts. I ordered the caramelized pineapple with cardamom, a ginger & honey syrup, pineapple chips, cocoa nibs, coconut ice cream, and coriander cress. My husband opted for the chocolate and hazelnut mille-feuille, which is a multi-layered French pastry with alternating layers of buttery pastry and cream.
Following dessert, we both ordered a small mastiha liqueur, which is a digestif seasoned with the resin from the mastic tree. The mastic tree is native to the Mediterranean region, namely the Greek island of Chios. Mastic resin (sap) forms in teardrops and has a bitter flavour at first, but after a moment becomes cedar-like. Mastiha liqueur is similar to ouzo or tsikoudia, both strong Greek liqueurs. It can be served either chilled or at room temperature, but it typically comes with a small glass of ice.
This fabulous restaurant is a great place for visitors to Athens as the menu has something for everyone and the views cannot be beat. The Galaxy Restaurant and Bar blends the ancient Athenian heart with the hip and stylish modern Greek, merging old and new in the heart of Athens. I recommend the Galaxy Restaurant and Bar to all visitors to this ancient city.
