What’s December Weather In Europe Like?
When you think of Europe in December, you may think of skiing in Scandinavia or snow falling softly as you wander the Christmas markets in France, Austria, or Germany. And both of those are accurate!
The truth is, that Europe weather in December varies greatly from country to country and even within each country, as inland temperatures and island temperatures can be very different.
But in addition to snowy mountains and fairytale-esque Christmas markets, there are also plenty of warm places in Europe in December and beyond.
Note, of course, that the temperature of a warm place in Europe is going to be different than, say, the temperature in the Caribbean islands. But you can still find sunshine, beaches, and mild temperatures!
Where In Europe Is Hot During Christmas?
You’ll find warm weather for Christmas in Europe at pretty much any destination on this list. But if you’re looking for a (close to) tropical Christmas, Madeira, and the Canary Islands are your best bet. Gran Canaria is considered one of the hottest destinations in Europe in December.
Warmest Places in Europe in December
Here are my top picks for the best warm places in Europe in December, in no particular order.
Crete – Greece
Greece is always a fantastic place to visit in Europe, thanks to its coastal landscape and rich history. Better yet, it’s home to a warm climate which makes it ideal for visiting anytime during the year. One of the best and warmest places to visit in Greece is Crete.
Weather in Crete in December and beyond has an average temperature of about 62°F which means you can relax on its beaches without fear of freezing. However, this time also is pretty rainy, so you’ll have to keep a close eye on the weather.
As Greece’s largest island, you’ll find plenty of unique activities to do, many of which aren’t as crowded because the tourist season is over. Archeological sites and wildlife areas are less crowded, and the area is usually adorned with beautiful decorations for the holiday season.
