How To Get From Rome To The Amalfi Coast And Sorrento

If you are in Rome and you feel like visiting the famous Amalfi Coast, don’t worry! There are many options to get there by public transport and you’ll surely find what perfectly matches your needs, both in terms of timetable and costs. The best starting points to discover the Amalfi Coast are Sorrento and Amalfi, but Napoli and Salerno are good options too.

Part 1: Roma to Napoli by train

  • Train: Circumvesuviana is the local railway network connecting coastal towns to Napoli Centrale train station. From Napoli, you’ll arrive in Sorrento in about 1h10 and the ticket costs about 4 euros.   • Boat: Napoli is well connected to the Amalfi Coast by boat. From the train station of Napoli Centrale, take the subway in Piazza Garibaldi (just outside the station) and get off at Università stop (about 19 minutes). Once you have reached the port, search for the hydrofoil belonging to the network named “Metrò del Mare” (“Sea Subway”). The journey time is around 2 hours and the cost is about 20 euros. Part 1: Roma to Salerno by train

You can also take a ferry to reach Positano. In this case, the journey will take around 1h10 and the ticket will cost about 12 euros. Reaching the Amalfi Coast by train:

Pros: Rome is very well connected to the Amalfi Coast and the best option is going to Napoli and catch a local train to get to Sorrento.

Cons: you cannot directly reach any location on the Amalfi Coast from Rome, so that you have to stop in Napoli or Salerno first.

Roma to Amalfi Coast by bus

Marozzi Company offers some rides to Amalfi. Departure from Tiburtina bus station and arrival in Flavio Square in Amalfi. Journey time: about 5 hours. Ticket cost: about 22 euros. 

Roma to Sorrento by bus

  • Marozzi Company offers some rides to Sorrento. Departure from Tiburtina bus station and arrival in Corso Italia in Sorrento. Journey time: about 4 hours. Ticket cost: about 19 euros. 

 

  • Flixbus Company is another good option. Departure from Tiburtina bus station and arrival in Corso Italia in Sorrento. Journey time: about 4h15. Ticket cost: about 14 euros. – Best option!

Reaching the Amalfi Coast by bus

Pros: if you are planning to stay a few days in Sorrento, the bus is the best option because it’s really cheap and the journey doesn’t take long (about 4 hours).

Cons: if you just have a weekend to spend on the Amalfi Coast, the journey is too long and it would be best to choose a high-speed train.
